Convert first pitch without losing the calendar day

A baseball time is useful only when its time zone is clear. The same game may be listed in the ballpark's local time, a broadcaster's time zone or your own device's zone. Identify which one you are reading before converting it, and carry the date through the calculation.

Begin with the time label

Look for an explicit zone or offset beside the start. UTC is a common reference, while a label such as JST refers to Japan Standard Time. JST is UTC plus nine hours, as defined by Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.

A local-time label can mean the viewer's time, the venue's time or a selected setting. Compare one known fixture with the official schedule if the meaning is unclear. Avoid applying a second conversion to an hour that has already been adjusted for you.

Work through midnight as part of the conversion

Consider an illustrative event beginning at 23:30 UTC on 10 July. In a location using UTC+2 on that date, it begins at 01:30 on 11 July. In JST, it begins at 08:30 on 11 July. The hour and date both change; the example is a calculation, not an announcement of a real fixture.

The reverse can happen when converting from an early Japanese start to a location west of Japan. Your local calendar may still show the previous day. Save the converted date with the matchup so that an alarm does not send you to a different meeting in the series.

Use the offset for the day of the game

Some locations change their clocks seasonally, and the change does not happen on the same dates everywhere. A difference you memorised last month may therefore be wrong for the next fixture. A city-based time-zone setting is generally more useful than assuming that a fixed offset applies throughout the year.

Recheck future reminders when travelling or when your device changes zones. The reminder should still represent the same instant, but a manual entry may have been saved as a local clock time rather than a properly zoned event.

Distinguish coverage time from game time

A programme may begin before first pitch with studio discussion or interviews. Decide which start you want to save. If the listing provides only a broadcast time, use the organiser's schedule to confirm when the game is due to begin.

For Japanese fixtures, return to the NPB listings once the conversion is clear. To compare events from more than one competition, use the baseball directory. If a first pitch changes after you set a reminder, the postponement guide explains the event updates worth checking.
